Snap Circuits Product Variations

Snap Circuits with Computer Interface ("S" versions) includes Software CD, PC Interface Cable, and 20 Computer Based Experiments, eg. the Snap Circuits SC-300 becomes Snap Circuits SC300S.

Snap Circuits with Educational Training Manual ("R" versions) is recommended for both the Course Instructor and Students. These versions include detailed course instructions, additional experiments, and a parts organizer box. Training programs include some of the following topics: Resistors, Capacitors, Transistors, Motors, Switches, Series Circuits, Parallel Circuits and much more.

Although Snap Circuits includes several parts that are called integrated circuits (IC), they are actually modules containing a number of parts. The modules contain specialized sound-generation and amplifier ICs and other supporting components (resistors, capacitors, and transistors) that are always needed with them. This was done to simplify the connections you need to make to use them.

Snap Circuits Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Are the manuals educational, and do they have anything that really teaches electronics?
These electronics kits teach basic electricity and electronics in the everyday world using Learn By Doing concept. Snap Circuits with Educational Training Manual ("R" versions) is recommended for both the Course Instructor and Students. These versions include detailed course instructions, additional experiments, and a parts organizer box.

2. Is Snap Circuits SC-750 too advanced for an 8-year-old?
All Snap Circuits products are for ages 8 to 13 years. The larger versions have more parts and projects so kids have more to do, but are all based upon the same principles - all parts snap together. All the manuals are easy-to-follow and suitable for an 8-year-old; however, an 8-year-old may not fully understand what he/she is doing, so parental explanations guidance .

3. Where can I learn more about the parts in Snap Circuits?
Read “About Your Snap Circuits Parts” section on page 3 or 4 of your Snap Circuits manual (comes in the box).

4. Where can I go for information on basic electronics, so I may better explain concepts to my kid?
We suggest going to search your terms on Wikipedia to help refresh on your knowledge.

5. What does the computer interface do?
a) It lets you “look” at the electrical signals by turning your PC into an oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer. It does not use your computer to control your circuits, only to monitor them.
b) Is there a Mac version? No.
c) Can the software and cable be used with other products? Yes.

6. What power sources can be used with Snap Circuits?
Only use the battery holders included in your set. Never use ANY other source of power. Never combine batteries holders from different sets.

Surface-mount technology (SMT)

SMC is a method for constructing electronic circuits in which the components (SMC, or Surface Mounted Components) are mounted directly onto the surface of printed circuit boards (PCBs). Electronic devices so made are called surface-mount devices or SMDs. In the industry it has largely replaced the through-hole technology construction method of fitting components with wire leads into holes in the circuit board. Snap Circuits electronic kits take SMT development to a new higher level.

History (Source - Wikipedia)

Surface-mount technology was developed in the 1960s and became widely used in the late 1980s. Much of the pioneering work in this technology was by IBM. The design approach first demonstrated by IBM in 1960 in a small-scale computer was later applied in the Launch Vehicle Digital Computer used in the Instrument Unit that guided all Saturn IB and Saturn V vehicles. (See Saturn Launch Vehicle Digital Computer article for a description of this type of electronic packaging as of 1964.) Components were mechanically redesigned to have small metal tabs or end caps that could be directly soldered to the surface of the PCB. Components became much smaller and component placement on both sides of a board became far more common with surface-mounting than through-hole mounting, allowing much higher circuit densities. Often only the solder joints hold the parts to the board, although parts on the bottom or "second" side of the board are temporarily secured with a dot of adhesive as well. Surface-mounted devices (SMDs) are usually made physically small and lightweight for this reason. Surface mounting lends itself well to a high degree of automation, reducing labor cost and greatly increasing production rates. SMDs can be one-quarter to one-tenth the size and weight, and one-half to one-quarter the cost of equivalent through-hole parts.
